GOOD NEWS FROM SBPA 🐈‍⬛🐕! A generous benefactor has pledged to match up to $12,500 USD of SBPA donations made by July 1st. This is your chance to HELP SBPA MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

The birth of unwanted litters of puppies 🐶 and kittens 🐱 is highest in spring and summer months. These babies and their mamas are often doomed to lives of suffering and neglect on the streets ☹️, and their presence can also spread disease and contamination to the human population.

SBPA, a 501c3 charity operating in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, educates people about the problem and provides free spay/neuter surgeries to those who could not otherwise afford this care for their animals. While we work closely with local shelter and foster care efforts, the potential for adoption lags far behind the need. ▶️THE BEST INTERVENTION is PREVENTION◀️.
At a recent clinic, SBPA and our amazing team of Mexican vets and technicians were able to provide 332 free spay/neuter surgeries, adding again to the almost 3,000 surgeries performed each of the last several years. BUT THE NEED CONTINUES AND WE NEED YOUR HELP. While agency-subsidized spay/neuter surgeries in the U.S. and Canada cost $35-$60 USD, and private vets charge up to $300 USD each, we can provide these surgeries for about $15 USD per animal.

💰 YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS GO FAR.

Where else can you double your money just by giving? We have doubled the number of clinics to two a month instead of one so ofcourse that means more donations needed. Two of our wonderful benefactors have stepped up for another Matching Grant campaign and will go as much as $12,500. We will keep on going as long as we have the funds to buy surgical supplies, meds, and sutures. It takes a village, and we are so very grateful for your support.

We are 10% of our goal so keep it going, folks.  Every donation matters whether it is 500 dollars or 50 dollars.  Remember peso donations can be taken to the SBPA Book Shop Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.July 1st is the cutoff for this Matching Grant challenge, so we have time justkeep hitting "donate" and we will make it.Another SBPA free spay-neuter clinic this weekend. How many animals do you think we will serve?  We'll report out at the end of the clinic.Remember we are now having two clinics a month rather than just one so this Matching Grant is critical to keep us going.

This weekend we will kick off our second clinic in May.  Our new protocol of two clinics a month will help us to better control the unwanted litters of dogs and cats in spring and summer. So many puppies and kittens are suffering because there are not enough good homes in our communities.  Prevention is the answer.Obviously, that means double the expenses each month.  As an organization, the SBPA searches for the best prices on the supplies we use for surgeries, and we buy them wherever they cost the least for professional quality syringes, surgical blades, sutures, and more. Some purchases are made locally, some in Hermosillo and occasionally in the US but always with cost and availability as key factors.SBPA has been doing these surgeries for over 25 years.  Our Obregon Vet team knows what they are doing and has a proven process for serving multiple animals in our clinic.  Two weeks ago we did 332 surgeries in three days.  Most by appointment. We will keep going until there are no more unwanted dogs and cats suffering on the street, being thrown in the trash, or tortured and killed. Please support this important work.  It all depends on you.

Please donate now to help keep our little community relatively free of street animals.

It’s a great time since you can double your donation.

Someone asked about the structure of SBPA.  Here is the info.

Thanks for this opportunity to help you understand the workings of SBPA.

We have been here in San Carlos since 1995.   Any donation to SBPA that is made online goes directly to the SBPA services, Inc. bank account which is overseen by our treasurer who is a long-time attorney in Tucson.

Because our 501(c)3 is US tax-exempt, our US Accountant files all necessary filings with the US Government each year.  Any peso donations go directly into the SBPA bank account at BanBajio.  That includes donations made at the Altered Tails Book Store.  And we have a Mexican accountant for the peso bank account which rarely receives large donations.

The Board members, the Treasurer, and none of the volunteers are paid.  The US accountant is paid $110 a year.   In reality, many Board members make generous donations each year to help cover our expenses.

We do not own any property, vehicles, or other equipment except for surgical tables and animal crates. Each surgery we perform has a total cost of $15 US.

The Obregon Vet team gets a small stipend for each surgery they perform.  They pay their own expenses to come and stay in San Carlos for the clinics.

Also included in this total of $15 US is the purchase of sutures, syringes, surgical gowns, masks, and caps required for the Vets during surgery, all anesthesia, antibiotics, sterile surgical gloves, exam gloves, and surgical blades and instruments.  We also purchase special products to clean instruments and to prep animal surgical areas as required.

Also, keep in mind we have been paying $150 a month rent for the clinic building for about 5 years and also a CFE electric bill which is relatively small.

Now, during 2020 we completed 2,978 free surgeries.  Local vets charge anywhere from $50 to $200 US for spay surgeries, our SBPA total cost is $15 US.

That said, our operating costs far exceed our donations, and if it wasn't for the passion of our board, our volunteers, and the willingness of the Obregon Vet team to cover so much of their own expenses we would not be able to operate at all.

We are in the process of finding a new clinic location because our landlord needs the use of his property back.  We do not have any finances to buy a property but are hoping for a rental at a reasonable rate in a location that is accessible for a pet owner.

Our mission is to prevent the birth of unwanted litters of dogs and cats that end up suffering in the street or are abused.

We hope to do over 4,000+ surgeries in 2021.

Please continue to support this work if you care about the animals and their welfare.

SBPA is happy to report we have reached about 25% of our Matching Grant Campaign goal.  In order to be given the entire $12,500 US, we must get matching donations totaling $12,500 by July 1st.

With so many San Carlos supporters leaving for the summer, we are worried we may not be able to match this grant.  Also, most of our Canadian supporters were not able to come to San Carlos because of the pandemic.  We are hopeful people will take the step to donate even if they are not in San Carlos.  It is easy enough to click on the link to donate no matter where you are.  Our promise is to keep everyone informed on how things are going and with your support, we are encouraged to forge ahead.

Remember we have doubled the number of clinics scheduled for the rest of 2021 potentially reaching many more animals in need.

Our next clinic is Friday, June 11 - 12 so look for updates here regularly.

Thank you, San Carlos, for your support since 1995.  Did you notice how few unwanted dogs and cats are NOT wandering the streets of San Carlos?  Thanks for your support.

Go to our website, https://www.sbpasancarlosmexico.com/ and make a donation.

Clearly many folks are gone for the summer because not too many responses to the most recent SBPA fundraising challenge.

The SBPA is working on a Matching Grant Challenge in the month of June for $12,500 of matching donations if we can raise that amount by July 1.

We have doubled the number of clinics to two weekends a month rather than one to meet the exploding need of animals having unwanted litters of puppies & kittens.  Spring and early summer are when so many litters are born, it is almost impossible to get ahead of them.

Anyone who has been in San Carlos for several years can attest to the fact that there are so few dogs and cats wandering the streets these days as a result of the 3,000+ free spay-neuter surgeries we have provided each year for the last three years.

Our neighboring communities still are struggling to overcome their local problem, but the great news is local community members are now gathering street dogs and cats and bringing them in for spay-neuter surgeries, so we are making progress everywhere.

Please continue to support our work if you can.  When we stop our surgeries the street animals will return.

Go to our website, https://www.sbpasancarlosmexico.com/, and make a donation.
