This made some news in the US, not sure if it made it down to San Carlos.

Bobby Unser, who spent time in San Carlos and had been to our home, has passed away in New Mexico.

I'm sure there are a few in San Carlos who would want to know.

I was under the impression that he had residences on the Caracol and/or Calle D in the Ranchitos, either concurrently or at different times. True?

There is a great story on ESPN about the controversial 1981 Indy 500, where Unser won it by five seconds over Andretti. But the victory was rescinded by the USAC because he passed cars coming out of the pit, while under a caution flag. Andretti was declared the winner.......until the lawyers for Penske and USAC got involved. Andretti claims that Penske had better lawyers that the USAC lawyers......and it was reversed, giving it back to Unser.

Andretti, however, kept the "winners" ring he was awarded initially, and whenever he would attend an Indy 500 function, he would supposedly rub Unser's ear with it. Andretti stated that Unser did commit the infraction, but he thought removing the victory was too harsh a punishment. Unser eventually was fined 40,000 for it. It turned out to be his last major racing victory.

Bobby did have a house on Calle Abulon on the Caracol, which he sold several years ago.  I thought it was hilarious he left a couple of LARGE paintings of himself in the house for the new owners.
I was told he had a house in the Ranchitos, but I don’t know it’s location.

Yeah, the ESPN article did mention that wherever he went, he was always the BIGGEST personality in the room.

I remember when both Bobby and Al had nice 38' Mediterranean sport fisherman tied up side by side in the marina. No doubt who they belonged to as both had their names on the flybridge.
Bobby used to come in the Marina Cantina and found him very approachable and willing to talk about racing and his experiences. Just a generally nice man. He will be missed.

Bobby was much more than the last controversial Indy 500 win. He was instrumental in making racing safer. Designing and developing racing tires, safety equipment and promoting safer cars. His book ‘Winners Are Driven’ is a great read.
He enjoyed San Carlos from the water to the desert..... flying his own airplane here up until last year.....His door was always open. He always had a kind word to say and time to talk.
He was funny, kind and a true gentleman.
