My friend has 2 more years of Temp Res before getting her Perm Res. In Az if you buy a used car private sale you pay no sales tax. If you buy that same car from a dealer and register in in Az you have to pay sales tax. I called AZ DMV about buying a used car from a dealer for export to Mexico and not being registered in Az, and they said it's up to the dealer whether or not they collect sales tax - that the DMV does not care if they do or not.

Is this true?

We are not AZ residents but were shopping for a used RV at dealerships in Arizona two years ago.  The first dealer we went to said that in order not to pay AZ sales tax we would have to take delivery of the RV across the state line in NM and pay a few hundred dollars delivery fee.  Two others were flat out no - we had to pay sales tax.

You do not have to pay sales tax IF you have an out of AZ drivers license. It can still be a hassle, like everything else in AZ, but you should be able to pay for the vehicle and get the title...but dealers in AZ play games.

Used cars from Sonora are cheaper, less money to insure, can drive in the states, and will not require import in two years. Easy to import into the US too.

From personal experience, having an out of state drivers license does not prevent the imposition of AZ sales tax. If the dealer will cooperate, you have to take delivery out of state to avoid the sales tax. The state has clamped down on dealers who try to avoid the tax.

That wont absolve you in most all states I have been in. They might not call it a sales tax, but it will be a tax of another name that matches their sales tax. California used to call it a Use Tax.

No tax on private party sales in AZ.  Dealer may be another story.  If you are from out of state and it is going to Mexico there may be a way around it.  The dealer might need to have paperwork showing delivery was taken out of state.  Some dealers will be more willing to work with you on this than others.

I have No experience with used car "Dealers" in Arizona...Therefore, any statement I would make regarding paying Tax at used car "Dealers" in Arizona would be just like the other posters here on this subject--Pure Speculation

Jimmy is correct-there is no sales or other tax on a sale between private parties.  Dealers do have to collect it and they can wiggle on it but it is going to get paid one way or the other.  I had a sales tax license in AZ for many years so my knowledge is first hand.
