How can it be a tour of France if it isn’t in France?
Wouldn’t it be a tour de México?

Marigot, of course you're right. I'm guessing that they're trying to bring an international cycle event like a Tour de France, here to San Carlos. It would be exciting!

It would be a great thing for our area if it happens. 👍

Tour de México!  Or Tour de Sonora!

After searching like crazy, I finally found what might make sense of the Opinión Sonora article:

The Etape by Tour de France series consists of all the official Tour De France branded events. Amateurs can now tackle routes on five continents similar to the ones on the actual Tour De France and experience all the emotions and excitement of participating in an event bearing the Tour de France name.

When you click on the calendar it says Sept 29, 2019, for Mexico City.

The La Paz and Acapulco events don’t have dates yet...or the one in California.
But San Carlos is not listed as a race site.

A pre-qualifier for teams that want to paricipate would seem to make more sense, but May's intrepretation of the orignal article saying theta they want the Tour de France here is spot on.
What was the mayor and reporter thinking? The mountain phase climbs where in San Carlos, for instance?

It seems to me like the Tour de France people own the name and are using it to sponsor biking events in each state of Mexico. Or trying to anyway.

this article and many written on "opinion" really questions the journalistic skills of it's writers! many times they appear to be "sound bites" taken out of context! i know many "native" readers who are always perplexed, and "non-native" readers bewildered with their translation!
in today's world it is probably best to obtain news from various outlets and arrive at a logical consensus!

Maybe they will be in a rush to improve some roads prior to the event.

The same way the Dakar Rally is nowhere near Dakar anymore.

Oh, those inventive French!

Champagne MUST be from the Champagne region to be called champagne...........but the Tour de France or the Dakar Rally can be anywhere they want it to be! :?

Nice background video on the San Carlos page. Highlights what is beautiful about San Carlos. I hope the event goes well. Would be a positive boost.

I perused the website for the San Carlos race. I could not find a map of the course. I think it's open to anyone who wants to ride, pros and amateurs, divided into classes and ages, and you can even ride a mountain bike.

Nevermind my original post (which was originally here) involving what may have been incorrect info from Radar Sonora.  Bart tweeted what is probably more accurate info on the following post so I deleted my original post and I will defer to him.

Here is the Twitter page for the organizers, and there is a post regarding an announcement with the mayors of Guaymas and Empalme.  https://twitter.com/LaEtapaMexico

Sorry for any confusion.
