Hi--Does anyone have any recent update on the ferry to Santa Rosalia from Guaymas?  Is it still running?  Same schedule?  Reliability, etc?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Dave, in terms of reliability, always consider that in winter it can often not sail for a week because of high winds.

My understanding that this the ferry was designed for lakes and not oceans.  Thus, it is frequently cancelled.

I believe the last time I went to that site, IE was the only thing that made that work.

While we're on the subject, whatever became of Webcrawler? Is Netscape Navigator still out there?

I have no info on the status of the ferry.  I can however provide insight on why various browsers don't work.

The ferry website is based upon Adobe Flash, a notoriously badly designed and written platform for which even Adobe will cease support in 2020.  Google has effectively released updated versions of Chrome which make it difficult to enable Flash to work (it's possible, but they really, really don't want you to run it because it is so insecure).  On top of that, Microsoft has announced that they will no longer support Flash in either Internet Explorer or Edge browsers in "mid to late 2019", so expect those browsers not to work on Flash sites, including the Ferry's, pretty much any day now.

Also, Microsoft has announced (and is close to releasing) updated versions of Internet Explorer/Edge which are based upon the Chrome browser, which effectively moves their support for Flash to Google's timeline.  At the end of 2020, you won't even be able to monkey around with Chrome's settings to allow Flash.....it will just be blocked, period.

Flash has been an entry point for countless virus/malware issues over the years, and they have had to release monthly updates consisting, usually, of several critical fixes due to constantly discovered new, serious vulnerabilities.

You can read more on Google's Flash position here: https://www.blog.google/products/chrome/saying-goodbye-flash-chrome/

The ferry website was likely designed many years ago and needs to migrate to an updated HTML5 platform soon or nobody will be able to access the website.

As for Netscape, it effectively morphed into the Firefox browser.

Webcrawler is still around, somehow hanging on as the oldest surviving search engine.
