Hi,
I'm thinking of renting a car at HMO airport for a couple of weeks.
Is there anything unusual I should be aware of?
Any rental agency I should stay away from?
Thanks, mcjensen

I don't know anything about rentals at the airport but if you are coming to San Carlos, another option is to take the bus to Guaymas and rent a car here.  There are several rental business close to the Tufesa bus terminal in Guaymas and you can get a good rate here if you reserve the car online before arriving.  Check the rates both here and at the airport online before deciding.

Make sure you ask about their insurance requirements.  It has been years since I rented a car here, but I remember the insurance required was not on the original quote and was expensive.

I routinely use Enterprise at HMO. Have had absolutely no problem. Count on it taking about 30 minutes though.

you will get lots of conflicting advice about night driving.  Animals on the road used to be a big risk but not much any more.  Slow vehicles without lights is a much bigger risk.  The few times I have driven at night, I always get behind a big truck and stay there.  The road itself now is good.

OK, thanks. Good to know. The car rental rates for small cars with full insurance at HMO airport are very cheap, around $12.50 per day---Europacar rentals.

I usually take a taxi from and to the airport, which runs well over $100 each way.

Most likely this does not include insurance. Quoted prices online are misleading. By law you have to get the “daños a terceros” liability insurance at least. And this usually doubles the price quoted online.
Son in law took the lowest insurance package for mid size and it was about 40usd/day total
Rental lady said next time call me and I can do it cheaper directly
Hope that helps

If all you are trying to do is get to SC and don't need the car while you are here.  The bus is by far the cheapest way to go.  Take a taxi to the bus termainal ($100 pesos a few years ago) and then Tufesa to Guaymas (around $150 pesos )

The road is confusing where the road into Guaymas and the toll road splits at the big service station - parking lot. Pay close attention to the signs as the previous split to the right to Gym is now a split to the left, which used to be the toll road to the toll booth. They are reversed.

Regarding night driving - I do not drive at night under any conditions, too many issues, check into a hotel, get a good nights sleep, leave early for SC, enjoy and be safe.l

American Express Cards, pay for insurance for car rentals. I used Thrifty Car Rentals for years, and they accepted the American Express insurance. I rented the car in HMO and drove to SC stayed as long as needed, drove back to HMO and paid for days of use, always an open contract, concerning the amount of days. I used this service for approx. 9 times a year, for many years.
