We went out today because the forecast for wind speed and wave height was 3 mph wind and .7 to 1 in wave height.  It was SO wrong!  White caps, high winds, and we had to turn around and come back after a launch/retrieve ticket of $8!  This is what I've been using:  https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/guaymas

Any suggestions for a wave height website that is more accurate?

All sites will be inaccurate, occasionally, due to pressure gradients that can change by a few hours of the original predictions. That is probably what happened today. Their prediction of a wave height of 2.3 feet and 13 knots simply happened earlier than the computer program predicted.

Weather is still a very complex thing to predict. It will never approach 100% without large arrays of sensors that measure temp, pressure, etc. Those certainly dont exist in Mexico.

To give you an example, heating of land, inland, creates rising air, which creates a low pressure over land. Cooler ocean air will move to fill in the low pressure area. But if high clouds or low clouds fog or even smoke from fires invade the area, it reduces how much the land heats. That makes for a weaker low pressure area, which reduces the velocity of wind entering the low pressure area. Just too many variables to predict.

That said, I like the general accuracy of windfinder a lot. I especially like how economical their interface is to see all that info at one glance.

But they do have a "virtual" station that might be more accurate than the Guaymas airport. Here it is.

I think wave height will always be the same as the airport. But wind predictions will be slightly higher at the La Manga prediction. As well it should.

What time, specifically, did you leave the harbor, Sharkbite?

7:30am is a decently early time to leave. The prediction was just mistimed. Just wanted to make sure you werent leaving around 10am.

I can never figure out why people are leaving the harbor at 10am or later. Certainly, no self-respecting fisherman should. If the wind is going to come up, it usually starts in earnest between 1030-11am. That's when land heating starts and causes air to begin moving. This assumes no fronts or storm cells are moving through the area. All bets are off, then.

If you are leaving out of MSC, be sure you "tough it out" for a mile or so, SW of Doble. The whole contour of the land from Doble north can accentuate winds near the coasts. Wave height, too.

Of course, if your destination is San Antonio, what you see is what you get, when you clear Doble. Refracted waves will be worse by Doble, but it will only be about 0.5-1.0 ft less at San Anton, if the wave direction is SW to WNW.

As soon as the temps raise above 90 the wind will start due to thermals. In the summer, you pretty much have to head south out at daybreak, then come home with the waves, counting on wind as a daily occurence

I like http://www.fishweather.com, but I will look at windfinder and clima to see what the others think too.
