In looking for recent articles in the local newspapers (I did find an article about the most recent burglary in the Ranchitos), I came across an article in El Portal de la Noticia that SEEMS to indicate that the main federal agency in charge of fisheries (SEMARNAT) has proposed banning ALL fishing in the Sea of Cortez.

The article's main focus seems to be the economic impact of this, which is understandable. But it does SEEM to indicate that SEMARNAT recognizes how much more money tourism related to the Sea (as opposed to commercial fishing) pulls in.

You be the judge about this article. It doesn't SEEM to separate recreational from commercial fishing, as I read it.

I use the capitalized SEEM because I am relying upon a translation program;  parts of the article aren't being completely translated.

The article does mention that a United Nations committee estimates that 40% of all fish taken in Mexico is illegally taken and, thus, outside of CONAPESCA's (the agency under SEMARNAT directly responsible for fisheries management) means of measuring the overall impact of fishing in the Sea.

There is some questionable statistics (in my opinion, questionable) that claim Mexico is already protecting far more areas of its oceans that required by an unspecified treaty Mexico signed. I guess it all depends on your definition of "protecting".

Here is a link to the article............

its states clearly that the article purpose is to strictly defends commercial fishing interests. I wouldn't worry.
