HI there we are visiting SC and am wondering what if anything can/should be done for an injured pelican that broke his wing  today diving into the water...he made it to the beach but is unable to fly. I called the local vet but was not able to get any help. Thanks much for any thought's on this!

My suggestion is to move him into the Estero Soldado lagoon next to a mangrove forest. It is an area rich with nutrients and little creatures to eat, and where he is protected from predators. This will give him a chance to heal by letting Nature take over. I've done this with birds whose legs have been disabled by human owned dogs. I have no evidence of eventual success, but it gives the creature a fighting chance.

Lots of them don't make it this time of year. I have seen over a handful that were doomed.
