you tube was great! I remember 30 years ago when Omar did his masters on the Vaquita, and it being endangered. (at the Tec de Monterrey Marine Biology University in Guaymas) The Mexican government didn't care. The fishermen complained that they needed to feed their families, and they didn't care either. The Mexican government was selling fishing permits for the Sea of Cortez to the Russians. Gill nets were stripping the sea, and no one was doing anything about it. Then Vince started writing about the fishing issues, and even went to Washington to speak with the others about the illegal fishing and export of several species, yet the government did nothing. Now with very few left???

Did I mention 30 years have passed, and now the battle is almost lost.

This campaign is the first time Mexico has admitted they need help policing these waters against poachers. There were estimated around 600 Vaquita left when that area was declared a preserve in 1995. Now less than 30 Vaquita remain....... in the world. Seriously sad.....Sea Shepard is bringing a 3rd ship up to help pull nets.At least they are trying........

Just to add some more fact to LTRs post. Omar Vidal was a passionate and valuable spokesperson both in the USA and Mexico regarding the vaquita. And, our graduate students did a lot of published research on the vaquita during their Master's degree work at TEC de Monterrey - Campus Guaymas. This work led to the creation of the biosphere reserve by the Mexican government. One of our students, Alejandro Robles, gave the keynote speech alongside President Salinas at the reserve's opening ceremony. During those times, the fishermen did cooperate closely with our students. When a vaquita did drown in a fishing net, we were contacted and were able to get the vaquita corpse for further research. Ultimately, we were able to collect 31 corpses and put them in our freezers for further research. We all had high hopes during that time. A lot was unknown about the vaquita but the research work conducted by students and faculty filled in many gaps in knowledge. In addition to our graduate students, many people were involved in this grand effort. One institute who also made significant contributions was Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego.

Thank you for this information. Very important to know all the history and the efforts made by these amazing students.I happened to be in Puerto Peñasco when President Salinas’ plane landed. I saw it come in for the landing. The crowds were cheering.
