I am hearing that Ernesto Zaragoza deCima, the man who has organized the International Billfish Tournament in Guaymas/San Carlos for so many years, has passed away in an automobile accident.

Our thoughts are with Claudia and his children in this time of immense grief.

He was such a kindly and generous man. I will miss talking to him about soccer, about wines, about fishing and diving, about his business plans. I will never forget how, when planning for his tournaments, he would reveal details of his personal/business life that I was shocked he would reveal to someone who had only know him a short time. He was THAT open about himself. Very refreshing in a man so wealthy and important, IMO.

Such a immense loss to the community..................our household is in tears.

Yes, a pillar in the community and remember he also donated his boat and all that goes with it to the Wounded Warriors program every June.

I am shocked and stunned at the loss of a man I considered a friend.  My sympathy to all of his family and friends.  This is a huge loss for the entire community of Guaymas-San Carlos.

And there is some kind of funeral type thing (not up on this too much in Mexico) tomorrow, Thursday, at 1pm at Iglesia San Fernando. I think that's the big cathedral, downtown. Many of the San Carlos contingent are going to that.

We attended the service last night.

We thought we were going to be fine, emotionally, as we haven't been in a church in many years and the service was in Spanish. So, we didnt have a clear idea of what was being said, all the time.

But when the family got up to speak at the end, it was a very emotional time for us and the whole congregation. This man was so loved by this community! It took all our strength to meet with Claudia afterwards to give our condolences.

They displayed an absolutely great picture of "Neto" in front of the altar. He appeared to be piloting a large sailboat, possibly the type that is used in offshore racing, and his clothing is absolutely SOAKED and clinging to him.........but he is grinning broadly into the camera. You feel his joy of the adventurous life he led.

Needless to say, it was SRO at the church.

I have never seen so many floral displays in one place. The church was overflowing with them, into the outer courtyard.

I remember fishing on his family's boat "Mr. Pete" with Captain Juan. Those were the days. We were all so young back then. He was the patron at Colegio Navarette Secondaria. His gracious wife Claudia is a dear friend. They are in my prayers.
