Vince, I'm not an engineer but we have mostly very porous ground here with all the sand, gravel and rock. Probably the majority of fresh water that leaks  will go down long before it will surface. The water laying on the surface of the street is pretty much sealed off from going down so it accumulates. I have not seen much clay or bentonite soil here as over near Santa Clara. Again, to me seems very tough to estimate gallons or liters per day. I would say that seems that line has constant pressure as opposed to the "on again off again" valve arrangement we seem to have here in Ranchitos. Sewage should eventually seal off the surrounding area due to the solids plugging and building up similar to a plugged filter, not to mention the smell. Ron

Its had to estimate unless you can capture all the water into one stream in a pipe with a constant slope, speed, depth and width.
If you can do that, timing how fast it fills a container (bucket?) is one method, you toy can use 7.45 gallons per cubic feet of space as a constant after you have estimated the speed it travels through the cross sectional area x a length to figure the time and volume.

Its tough where it is as the ground is so flat. You could probably fix the leak faster than the time it takes to get an accurate measurement.
