Route is pretty simple-depending on where in LA you are starting from, either I10 or I20 west. They merge in west Texas. From there I10 west to Tucson, then south on I19 to Nogales. Take the Mariposa Rd exit west/south to the border.
Stop at the 21KM checkpoint and get your tourist card and follow MX 15 south thru Hermosillo to the Guaymas/San Carlos exit. About 250 miles from border to San Carlos. Don't drive it at night for highway safety reasons.
