I've been gone for awhile but was wondering if anyone has heard anything new regarding airline service from Phoenix or Tucson to Guaymas....... saw the write up by What's Up San Carlos but nothing after their article. Hope it has not "died on the vine" as it would be a great alternative to driving.

You know, if the RUMORS about a January start date were true, don't you think the investors would have been investing in some advertising that some of us would have seen, by now? January is a week away. In the meantime, people are buying advance tickets on all the bus lines that would also service this route. They are losing customers if it is a January start-up. It's doesn't give me much faith in their business plan and long-term survivability, if this is how they start. In the 21st Century, you gotta create a buzz!!!! How true, Hook !! WE'll be with some "movers and shakers" this weekend and I'll check our their outlook too. I agree everything looked so promising and then "nothing" !! Buses are not that bad but our grandson, and his family, have a 2 year old and sitting on a bus from Phoenix would not be her idea of "having fun". Thanks again for your response...... H

I think you meant Phoenix to Hermosillo right? I checked online and prices vary by day. Jan 12 was $113 for example which is reasonable I think. As far as flights to Guaymas, I will believe it when it happens.

Family just flew in on Volaris on Tuesday from Phoenix to Hermosillo for about $260 round trip. This was booked several months ago. Checked the price about 2 weeks ago and it had dropped to $220. The flights are only on Tuesdays and Saturdays on a 737. Plane that brought family was almost full, maybe 8-10 empty seats.

I think that's pretty reasonable for a flight to/from HMO to Phoenix. PHX is a much better hub to be catching flights in and out of, from all parts of the world, too. Especially this time of year. Just had a friend ride Tufesa up and the combination of the BH checkpoint AND the border tacked on another 3+ hours. Coming back, he was driving his visiting families' car. Getting through the tourist visa line at K21 took ANOTHER 3 hours. So, basically, the bus up and back takes a total of 24 hours. Whereas, I assume the flight takes about an hour and a half for a total of 3 hours? How much would you pay to avoid 21 hours of travel time? Eliminate the Christmas delays at k21 and you are still gaining about 18.5 hours. I think the buses charge about 65.00US each way, to Guaymas. I think the taxi/bus combo from HMO to Guaymas is about 15.00, no? Figure another 2.0 hours x 2 for 4 hours, assuming you cant get someone to drive and pick you up in HMO? So, the premium to fly is around 160.00, maybe. I would pay that to avoid the extra 14.5 hours.

Flying only Tue or Sat is pretty restrictive for a lot of schedules. And why not get the FMM at the border in minutes and skip the 3 hr line at K21. Last edited on Sat Dec 26th, 2015 04:20 pm by nice guy |

Yes, it's restrictive, but I doubt that the Guaymas flights will be much more frequent. Just no demand to support it. Fortunately, we are a retirement town, where the day of the week is not that important. I often forget what day of the week it is. Good point, on the FMM right at the border. I'll mention that option to my friend. He seems to be driving relatives down on a regular basis, especially during holidays. Can you get the FMM at the border at the Mariposa crossing? IF you can, are you then forced to drive through Nogales, MX.? Last edited on Sat Dec 26th, 2015 04:33 pm by Hook |

Yes FMM at border , reverse back few feet and make turn to drive up hill. Very easy , can also do declaration there normally very quickly. NO need to go downtown - although I prefer it !

Tufesa bus makes it to Phoenix in 9 hours if you take it at 2:00 pm from Guaymas. At Benjamin Hill it usually takes about 15 to 20 mins. and at the Border it usually takes about 15 to 20 mins. At that time of the day there usually isn't any buses in front of us. At that time of the day the bus only stops in Hermosillo. Nogales and Tucson. The buses at night take a lot longer to get there as they spend a lot longer at Benjamin Hill and in Nogales.

The proposed flights from Phoenix to Guaymas were touted as being a sure thing. What happened?

Maybe economics happened. The PHX-HMO flight is sometimes at 85.00/ one way. Add two hours and about 15-20.00 for a bus to Guaymas and it is going to be tough to compete with that. Heard they also are adding/have added a Thursday flight. This is Volaris. I believe the flight leaves HMO at around 12:30pm which means no need to spend the night in HMO to catch an early flight. Easy drive up during daylight, too, if you can convince a neighbor to do it.

I work for American. When the company was flying the Dash-8 turboprop from Phoenix you Guaymas, the load factor was less than 30%. The ticket price was high enough that the flight broke even. When the turboprops went away and the 50 seat jets took over the route, it lost money on almost every flight. I enquired about the possibility of that rout starting up again and was basically told "not a chance."

The USAir PHX/GYM flight was actually operated by Mesa Air and their Dash-8 planes. Maybe Now that AA owns USAir, and they have deeper pockets, they might once again contract with Mesa Air and promote the flight more in order to sell more seats. IMO, The key to success is in promotion and partnering with Guaymas/San Carlos hotels.

The CEO of US Airways is now the CEO of American. Doug Parker is a very conservative guy and will not let a route continue that is losing money. He is really cleaning house at American. I do agree that if the hotels and charter companies could come up with a proposal to make the flights profitable, the airline might consider it. Sky West is now the operator of our 50 seat jets and that company is even more expensive than Mesa. It would probably take 25-30 people on each flight to break even, maybe 1 or 2 less with the low jet fuel prices. It would take a lot of work to get air service back to Guaymas.
