Visiting for a few days, to familiarize myself with San Carlos.  Can anyone recommend an in-expensive hotel.

I believe El Crestón motel is pretty reasonable and centrally located. Check Tripadvisor.com for reviews of various places. They seem to be pretty accurate. I don´t know if Gringo Pete´s is still in business. They were pretty reasonable (funky but clean). I don´t have contact info for them. Departamentos Adlai is also considered reasonable.

You can bargain the posted walk in prices with el Creston if you are nice, and mention that you are staying moore than one night.

If you want to be on the beach, Hotel Playa San Carlos is the place! Plus they have a great bar & restaurant! P.$1,020 or approximately US$62 double occupancy Tel.: 51 (622) 226-1212

If you can handle rustic it's Posada Del Desierto. Much cheaper than the others mentioned. Google it.

I really urge you to read the reviews on Trip Adviser. Looks can be deceiving. Hotel Playa San Carlos is a case in point.

Hotel Playa San Carlos (the old Hotel Fiesta)is a dump. What used to be a very nice place is now a shabby, run down disaster. The current owners have let it run down to where it is barely habitable. The restaurant is horrible with wait staff that is lazy and incompetent.    A shame as it was once a nice place.

Our favorite place to stay, if we need a room, is Condominios Pilar.  On one of the best beachs in SC

WRONG Darbone!! The former caretakers of the hotel are the ones that ran it into the ground and yes, it got to a shabby state. Since Catalina Ordaz took over she and her husband have cleaned it up and refurbished everything! It's eclectic for sure, but clean and comfortable and a bargain for being on the beach. As for the restaurant, like I said, they cleaned EVERYTHING and brought Angel, formerly of La Palapa Griega, back to run it. The food and drink are among the BEST in San Carlos! The location, on the beach, with the option of inside or outside dining is unequaled. Try it Darbone, it ain't like it used to be, and methinks you'll like it!! Oh, and BTW, it's on the same beach as Condominios Pilar only with a more Southerly exposure; better for sunbathers!

Yes Monte, the 16% is included in the P.$1,020 price. (US$62).
MaryT, as for the Trip Advisor piece, it was written about the way the hotel was under the former management. Try the hotel & Angel's cuisine in the dining room now, methinks you'll like it!

I stand by my opinion. And I'm not related/ nor have any relationship (good or bad) with the people who own the place but I have unfortunately stayed at that dump. The only thing good about it was they accommodated my dogs, which seemed appropriate as the room was like a kennel. The beach at Pilar and the estuary is much nicer (again in my opinion) than the beach in front of the Old Fiesta.

Another plug for the Ordaz's, man are you a glutten for punishment.
Catalina has made a nice living preying on the the unsupecting for decades, so running up her flag in the daylight on any SC Forum where it can be seen, correctly identified, and shot down really isn't helping you or her.
I'd stick to talking about the price of cheese in Amsterdam if I was you. This  is more up your alley.

Bullshipper, you say, "Catalina has made a nice living preying on the unsuspecting for decades..." So since it has been "for decades" I'm sure you won't be at any loss for words in providing us with a few examples? Your personal experience might be a good place to start.

MaryT, Catalina took over last year and has cleaned up the mess and filth caused by lack of maintenance by the former operators. The efforts have been in the form of paint, plumbing and electrical repairs as well as new beds and a/c units where necessary. The kitchen underwent a complete cleaning and revamp. I describe the place as eclectic and a bargain as far as beachfront accommodations go and that's what I wish to convey to the original poster. The personal attacks on Catalina only showcase those individuals bad manners.

thecptn (original poster in case you have pets), darbone85737 claims to have been allowed to stay at the now Playa Hotel with two dogs. This was most certainly NOT on the current General Manager's watch. She has always had a strict NO PET policy based on Guaymas and Sonora State law as pertains to hotels, so darbone85737 stay with pets must have been during the interim operators management period.

Richard,
When I started to look at real estate in San Carlos in the 80's Catalina was already famous in town for good reason. Since I lived in Hermosillo, came to SC weekly, and am bilingual, both American, Canadian and Mexicans were nice enough to inform me repeatedly as to her shenanagens.
So I and other posters here continue to pay that favor forward when someone like yourself or other family members promote her "aquired businesses" to SC virgins.
If you of all people need to know more of whats been documented in the past, or of the current civil and criminal suits against her, I suggest you march your butt down to the justice department and public records in Guaymas to study her public legacy or ask any owner who is currently suing her to get paperwork for properties purchased outright years ago.
She'll be hauled back into jail again shortly, you count on that.

Richard, I am glad to hear she is updating but I can tell you the only reason Americans were staying there was because the old place allowed dogs. I will have to advise people on Tripadviser that that policy has changed. They will be very disappointed. I don´t know if Catalina wants American business but she might want to look at her listing on TA. It is very hard to find now that the name has changed (couldn´t she have at least called it Playa San Francisco Hotel to avoid the confusion with the other San Carlos hotel?)

My comment was intended to refer to the property only. I have no idea who Catalina Ordaz is, who the previous owners were or the issues surrounding their ownership. . When we book accommodations I never ask "Who owns the place" And yes, we only chose that property because (1)we were familiar with it from past years when we enjoyed the restaurant and (2) they accommodated dogs.

Bullshipper, what an appropriate handle you chose! Your post above is ALL bull(!), but of course you know that. You also say she is going back to jail? How can one go back if one's never been there in the first place? Current lawsuits? There are none. Past, yes but all exonerated and no settlements. People like you wanting to run her down, yes, but from behind safe anonymous names like "Bullshipper". How 'bout some substance fella? Ya falla?

MaryT, up until about 2008 Blackie Alcantar currently of Blackie's Restaurant, was the GM of the old Fiesta Hotel. Then Catalina became the GM under the new corporation and Angel the restaurant manager. Since then until 2011 she had a strict NO PETS policy. In 2011 a usurper had her forcibly removed and the hotel went way downhill until she legally got the GM position back last year. The usurper(s) fled. Again, she instituted a strict NO PETS policy as dictated by Guaymas and Sonora hotel law and Angel is back running the restaurant which is as good as ever!

My nephew put her in jail a year ago and she is out on bail, stalling the criminal case.
There is a 7 year lawsuit going on between her and all of the owners of  the high rise beach Condos west of charly rock
she has been taken to court on more than one ocassion for trying to grab other retirees properties in the Bahia.
etc

Now has that info helped you or her? If so, please keep beating her dead horse.

A lot of the thinking comes from releases like this. Is this true Richard? You and Gadsby are the only people that defend the family. I understand you steadfastness, but Gadfly?? They do own (the family Ordaz) the property he lives on at F St.

"It has been confirmed by various sources that yesterday afternoon Carmen Ordaz was served an arrest warrant by the Ministero Publico in Hermosillo. Also included in the arrest warrant was Javier Ordaz. All this stems from the land deal over at Punta San Antonio that goes by the name of Costa Bella.

Catalina Ordaz may also be under investigation. In the below document Scotia Bank is essentially asking for an investigation. This is undoubtedly related to the on going dispute over at the Fiesta Hotel. As more info comes in we will update these cases. These two cases are just simply the most recent in a string of land fraud and bad real estate deals that have plagued San Carlos for years. These two cases show very good reasons why San Carlos should be its own Municpio and have its own District Attorney whose mandate would be to aggressively prosecute land and real estate fraud."

The whole time I was thinking you guys were discussing the San Carlos Plaza Hotel?!! But in fact it's the San Carlos Playa Hotel...aka Old Fiesta Hotel. Finally occurred to me you weren't speaking about a hotel on Playa Los Algodones, but rather Playa San Francisco.

I thought, Wow, the Family acquired something on Playa Los Algodones too?

And once upon a time there was a sleepy little town down in Mexico, that they called San Carlos. There were many, that were happy living the simple life, until one day, people started to realize that not all was as it seemed.......

It is all too common to check your common sense at the border on the way down. I like living here but it is wise to keep your wits about you and not be so trusting when it comes to financial matters.

All Ya'll should start a new thread. This one was started by "thecptn" to answer his questions regarding hotel accommodations in SC. I have adequately answered him. As for RichD, do you know of anyone ever that has been in any way defrauded by Sunshine Realty, the oldest r/e company in SC?

Good question "johnmoore", but I really do suggest ya'll start a new thread. My wife "johnmoore", started in the r/e business 43 years ago under her own name. 23 years ago, I came into the picture from the r/e business in NM and named it Sunshine Realty using the NM Zia Sun symbol on the logo. We have always been independent and to date have a perfect track record in that we have NEVER EVER been sued by anyone for anything, EVER, and everyone of our clients have gotten their trust or deed as the case may require. We currently operate under a referral basis and get more than enough business. Our phone number is 226-0980.

This is an example of how a thread can go sideways quickly. It all started with good intentions and answers to the original poster were good, and offered good advise. I hope that the poster is smart enough to know that none of what followed was intended toward him/her, and that the welcome sign always shines bright here in San Carlos.
