Something I read on another site.  No idea if it is true or not.

"You shouldn't have any problem finding them (Hobie) in the San Diego area. From what I understand, many of them can't even be given away. Im shopping for a Lazer and hear this a lot. Sorry I can't help you with "where' but I'll look around.
By the way, the Lazer is a small, go-fast olympic class and much easier tto handle, probably why Hobie's have declined in popularity."

Sorry JZ... I must disagree with your support of the Lazer... AND the disparaging remark, "probably why Hobie's have declined in popularity"

Lazers are for guy's that "can't get it up!"

Yes... I'm a Hobie lover... nothin' like flyin' high and fast... nothin'

Don't shoot the messenger.  I saw it on another board.  20 people posted after the comment and no one took it to task.

But, as I stated, I have no clue.  My experience is chics dig power, so I stick to that... ;)

I love Hobie Cats!  Thats how I learned to sail as a beginner.  I am thinking of coming to San Carlos to sail with  the Baraff dude! He looks like he knows what he is doing and it looks like fun to be on a bigger sailboat.  But the Hobie Cat is fun and easily portable without the high maintenance and slip fees!  I respect that everyone has there own style and taste on what they like and with whatever kind of sailboat!  As long as your sailing who cares about how fast your going or how high.  It is the feeling of being in control, having the wind in your hair, the sun on your face and the exhilirating feeling of being on the water.  :D

We have a very fun 28 foot trimaran, Chantik, that sails like a big hobie cat over at sonoran sport. Very fast and super stable. This is one of the best boats to learn to sail on and we do the ASA basic keel boat course on her. I hope to put a 40 foot wing mast on her this year or the next year. I have a simple goal, to be the fastest boat in San CArlos!! Perhaps our sailing club would be a good option for you. Once you have checked out on the Chantik you can take her out as often as you like, here is the link http://www.sailsancarlos.com/sonoran_sport_center_sailing_clu.htm with some pictures and info.

You will love sailing here in San Carlos!!!!

I like Hobies too.  In 1969 I built a 19' cat modeled after the Hobie.  It was a dream to sail.  Sometimes I wish I still had it.:)

Hobies pop up fairly regularly on Craigslist or the Beachcats. I had a guy drive all the way from Santa Barbara to buy my 1984 Hobie 16 for $2500 so they must not be so plentiful all over Kalifornia...

Oh I'm sorry. Is this a new rule? I see a lot of other listings for sale within posts in this section and others that have been up a long time (see "used market in San Carlos" etc), and my post was a response to a direct question so I didn't think anything of it. I'll admit I was unaware of your "mercado" section as it doesn't come up on my bookmark but given the lackluster traffic to this site and with so many other free options on the web, I can't justify the fee. Thanks anyway.

Perhaps a mass email or popup window informing members of changes in policy might avoid future confusion.

No, the rule has been in place since the forum opened and is on our FAQ page and in our Read Me First section  It is really pretty simple-those that have paid ads on sancarlosmexico.com can post-others cannot.  That is why we opened the Mercado section to allow those with smaller items to self subscribe and post.  If you click on the logo at the top left or the left most portion of the nav bar, the entire forum site will open.

Think our advertisers have been pretty satisfied because their stuff seems to sell. And advertising is what pays the bills around here.

Thanx

Bart

Well I'm more than a little confused. I see the forum started October 2005, yet the Mercado was added in October 2007. So this rule was in place even when the Mercado didn't exist? Can you explain how the other postings are allowed yet mine was not? I thought it was because they pre-existed the 'mercado' forum but I see that isn't the case with all the postings.

I don't visit here regularly because not much seems to be going on. I subscribe to a few threads including the Hobie Cat one so that is how I knew someone was looking for one. I see my bookmark is for the "topical forums" so that must be how I missed the 'mercado' section since October. I never visit the main site.

I understand your need to generate revenue. I maintain my own dotcom website with 1500GB of storage space for personal use. It's hell to cover the $7.95/month hosting fee but I am going to hold out going the advertising route as long as I can.

Perhaps you could provide me with some hard statistics on the traffic your Mercado section generates. The Alexa rank is pretty low and dropping for the main site, so I can' t imagine the forum would be any better. I perused the ads on the forum, but it was pretty sparse. I just need to see what value I will get for my $10, especially compared with Craigslist, Beachcats, and Rockypointonlineinfo which are free sites. It does seem rather unusual to charge for classified listings especially for forum users.

Yes the policy has been there since day 1.  We do allow posts from paid advertisers on the web site and it may not be obvious who they are.  Some others may have slipped by me but we try and stay on top of that.

Stats for the Mercado listings are shown by each listing.  We think the pricing is fair for the level of exposure and understand others don't charge.

We'll look at a broader means of announcing changes in the future if warranted and I'm sorry you did not get the word.

Bart
