We are hoping to get some feedback from folks who have first hand experience with the marinas in San Carlos, Mexico: Marina San Carlos and Marina Real. We are interested in living aboard (with our dog) and also storing our 28' sailboat there over hurricane season. From Google Earth, it appears that Marina San Carlos is better protected, but that's just an assumption. Any experiences or thoughts on pros/cons of each marina (amenities, internet connection, security, hurricane protection, etc) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! http://www.controlledjibe.com Cruising till the money runs out or the golden retriever mutinies...

MSC: Pros: well maintained facilities, full range of conveniences and services, bathrooms and showers, very secure, possibly safer in a hurricane, better launch ramp. Cons: about 20% more expensive to slip than Marina Real; farther from WINTER fishing, generally, no difference for summer fishing.

Marina Real , is generally quieter and is certainly cheaper , presently being refurbished which helps as well. Security whilst not always obvious is very good . Space handy for dog to walk and close access to beaches . Internet available as well as bathrooms etc. You would need to specify a slip with water and electric as not all have it. Disadvantages could be - further out you need transport more so than in Marina San Carlos, cannot just walk to shops / bars etc. More exposed in a Hurricane or tropical storm That said I personally like Marina Real , like the lack of people all over the place and the peace and quiet is nice , office and marina staff all incredibly friendly and helpful , security guards very watchful. Marina San Carlos is the high end in town one and Marina Real is the more rural one - less sophisticated ! You really need to visit to get a feel of the differences and see which suits your needs best :-) both are really good , storing I would suggest you store out of the water whichever one you choose. For your length boat I "think" its about $80 a month difference Good luck !

Thanks so much for the replies and thoughts. We are certainly more interested in the quiet, slower pace and don't have a need to be in the middle of the 'action'. Thanks again for the comments!

Wow. This was very helpful as we are just chosing a marina right now. We have definitely leaning toward Marina Real. We like the atmosphere out there. Thank you.[ user=6181]Ian948[/user] wrote: Marina Real , is generally quieter and is certainly cheaper , presently being refurbished which helps as well. I have been at both for years, including their haul-out facilities and totally agree with the previous email. Both are good facilities in all respects, but the biggest thing that drove me to Marina Real is the very loud music at Marina San Carlos on weekend nights that goes until after 2am sometimes! This happens many weekend nights and gets old. I don't think I could live there again.

The big difference between the two is the Marina SC is a commercial marina with charter, dive and excursion boats and surrounded by businesses and marina real is totally non-commercial and surrounded by residences. To the best of my kowledge there is no out-anchorage at Marina Real as there is in the bahia at Marina SC. You're either at the dock or somewhere else. Links to the web sites for the two facilities are at http://www.sancarlosmexico.com/marineservice.html Bart
