Any issues with bringing spear guns to Mexico? We would be free diving. What size would be best for close to shore? (smaller fish) I'm a novice.... ![]() Last edited on Fri Sep 24th, 2010 07:59 pm by LAMax |

I've never had any problem bringing a speargun down. Size depends on what you're going after and how deep you are willing to go. If your spending most of your time in 20 to 25 feet, I'd use a pole spear and bring a file as you'll likely bounce off a rock or two. Great way to pick up nice dinner fish. If you're seeking a larger fish and are willing to dive into deeper water, then a modest size double arbelet gun works well. Don't need a big woody here. Dive with a buddy and get your speared fish out of the water. I use a small 2 man raft from Walmart as a fish pot. It easily holds my gear and fish and if we get tired, we can jump on. handy if you've made one of those "it felt like 50 foot and turned out to be 70 foot" dives that leaves you pretty pooped. I use a 20 foot leash and we trade who ever is going deep. Hope this helps Kurt

no problem at the boarder with spearguns, I use a 60" riffe mid-handle perfect for sneaking around rocks and at the same time gives you enough range to shoot at fish that are 12' away. anything smaller you loose range cabria pargo or snapper are pretty skittish you need to see them before they see you. if you need some one to guide you around a can be available. Lalo, Are the Yellowtail increasing in numbers and size yet, with the cool water? I heard they were catching just small ones. I won't tell anybody! Thanks Seamus

Lalo, Vince, and anybody else interested, The date has been set for Sat March 12, for the San Carlos YT Open. Go to yellowtailopen.com to get the latest applications etc. As usual, MX Citizens are half price on the entry fee. From a charter stand point, I may have people looking to charter small boats. Hope you can participate this time. Thanks Seamus

In past years, your business has hindered your participating. If out of business, at least you can compete, look at the bright side. Obviously kidding, and hope things pick up. Things have improved "some" in the States for me, but unfortunately, the media have convinced most Americans that when they cross the border, they can expect a bullet in the head, followed by decapitation and rape. Yet I come down with my wife and 2 yound kids frequently, without incident. Have to imagine, it can only get better, hang in there. Seamus

LOL, that is so true, I am actually thinking about doing a travel documentary on coming to san carlos and putting it up on line. Will be approaching sponsors such as the OCV and others here in San Carlos to see if they would like to finance it, and I am for the first time in 20 years advertising in Tucson at the U of A. I figure since all the students there have been told not to come down because as you so eloquently put it, they are asking for a bullet in the head and oops I dropped the soap in the shower type of experience, then a little reverse psychology on them might work since I vaguely remember when I was a student the moment I was told not to do something was the moment I decided I´d best do it!!! ![]()

Mike Ward, whom runs the Scuba Program for the U of A, has been told that he could resume taking students down to Mexico for their OW, after almost a year restriction. Alhough they still will not allow the U of A van for transportation of the students, it is at least, a step in the right direction.

So, did you get it when they came back around? Have done that, now take the safety off of every gun I use so it won't happen by mistake. Seamus

I do hate equipment failure, and normally have myself to blame, as it is a result of poor maintenance on my behalf. Not speaking for you, sometimes it just happens. As I mentioned, will be down for a week between Christmas and New Years, I'll bring a few extra slip tips with me in case you need a new one. Hopefully we can hook up that week. I'll email you. Regards Seamus

I hate it when that happens, nothing worse than pulling the trigger and then the realization that you have committed the most basic error in the sport!!! Did you go to San Antonio? 2 hours in the water means you really earned that fish!!! I am pretty sure I have an extra slip tip at the shop, what is the diameter of the shaft?
