Hi all, We are first timers coming to SC in 2 weeks, I am getting conflicting stories for driving down as to what you have to do after crossing the border heading south. 1. we have our FMM's  for less than 7 days stay and are told we must stop at KM 21 to get them validated by Mexican immigration2. I was told by Vagabundos the travel club that the free zone no longer exists- apparently it has been that way for about 5 years, Any help would be appreciated.

The free zone designation only applies to vehicles. And, yes, it appearsTHIS WEEK, you still need no permit for a standard vehicle that stays north of Empalme.

About five years ago, maybe less, customs began requiring that even a standard vehicle (meaning non-RV) towing a utility trailer, especially with ATVs, began paying a refundable bond, to ensure it was not sold in Mexico. The standard vehicle was included in the bond paperwork. It became a major headache. It appears it has since been relaxed. That is probably why the confusion in the Vags office.

You will still need to get your FMM stamped by INM. That you can do at K21.

Be sure and bring a RECEIPT that shows you paid for that FMM. I read a recent example where someone went through bureaucratic hell when trying to use a pre-paid FMM; all because they didnt have the receipt that shows they paid for it.
