Something at a friend's house - apparently on the exterior roof ? - calls several times right at dawn and sunset - sometimes several short ones in the middle of the night. Sound is usually fairly loud and a string about 4-ish  shortish equally spaced same sounds - like xxxx  xxxx  xxxx  xxxx - and the xxxx are not like a crow, or like a woodpecker, or chirps like a sparrow. It has no melody or song to it. Maybe like a lamb's bleat - baa, baa ... Do geckos make sounds?

Could it be a grackle?

Geckos do make sounds.

Search for the sounds of both on youtube. See if either are the same.

Yes. I knew I had/have Geckos in the house. I concluded that must be it. Haven't actually seen one make noise.

Or maybe louder, they can be very vocal. We have more than a few come out late afternoons/early evenings looking for insects and congregate near lights as the bugs start to congregate in the patio. Most are tail and all, about 3 to 4inches long. Some are plain loud. Their own peculiar sound. We have little ones as well maybe 1 inch to one and a half inch overall. They all can run across the satin painted ceiling as easily as a rough concrete walk. Ynot

I have a wood pecker that likes my neighbors tinaco top to call his mate, then she starts up with her drum solo around 545. When the tinacos are empty they make even more of a racket.

Their benefits far outweigh their sounds, IMO.

I find that when the summer abundance of insects has died down, they are much less prominent.

Maybe they make noise in the warm, summer months as a lure to the opposite sex? And all that "fast food" around, too! Males and females, hanging out near a light, in all that excess.

It's like a pub crawl, looking for, uh, companionship.

I remember those days.......barely.

Anyway, I dont know how to get rid of them. Don't want to know. They are useful, interesting creatures.

Good choice - for you. I don't want the wake up calls at 1-2-3-4-5 am - or more.

Here's a thought. Try turning out lights on your bedroom structure and turning on lights on your garage or some other structure. I find that they are only on buildings with lights because the lights attract insects and they are after insects. Maybe they will migrate to the other buildings.

It might take a few weeks, but it might work.

I get 4-6 in my glue traps, along with a few scorpions. I think thy are after the insects that also get trapped in them.

But usually if you fumigate your place inside to get rid of their food bugs, they will seek greener pastures outdoors.

I don't care what they eat. I have figured out what they don't eat - a can of Raid.
