The concern is whether the shutdown would impact the expedited process. I don't know the answer to that but it might.

So, from the beginning:
1. "Expires in less than 6 months" - is that like 5 months, or <2 weeks?
2. "crossing at Mariposa" is driving, nothing to do with flying.
3. "certainly will not get 180 day" that seems to be the one statement that is without dispute, except I was issued a document that was under much more scrutiny, and it is valid 7 months longer than my US passport. It also brings up the question of 7 day visa vs 180 day visa. There used to be the 30 day which would cost the same as a 180, but in this case, it would be the answer.
4. Cole4 doesn't say where they are driving from - if it's British Columbia, I would suggest delaying the trip until you can verify the requirement. If it's Tubac, well....
5. "many answered but did not answer your question" - your answer is no more valid than the others; it is your experience, just like the rest. Even if it is the law in MX, the only person who decides whether you get it or not is the agent on duty the day that you apply.

I am Almost Certain that you can no longer get one in advance at your nearest Mexican Consulate, so that leaves three options:
1. Renew your PP by expedited process - the agent at the PO will be able to say if they are on schedule or not with the shutdown.
2. Apply online and see if it works through Vagabundos?
3. Drive down and try. I might suggest you park and cross at Deconcini as the Immigracion office there did issue me a 30 day FMM to use during my application for the Residente Temporal renewal. Plus, if you get told NO, you merely have to walk across to border parking instead of going to the back of the auto line.

Best of luck! If you need any investment advice, be sure NOT to ask here!  LOL!!!
