Because there are spaces at the bottom of the doors in my house, I seem to get mouse visitors more than I would like. I can't do anything about the spaces. I have been using the sticky traps with some success. But, my lady friend is petrified by mice and is pushing me to hire an exterminator. Since I have never hired an exterminator, I have two questions:   1) Do professional exterminators have an effective way of getting rid of mice permanently or are the traps that I use the best that I can do?
 2) If a professional exterminator for mice is recommended, which person should I use???

Cat.  Non-toxic and 100% effective.

Hi Leslie:

Thanks for the help, but my lady is highly allergic to cats. My traps are only working sometimes.

Put some weather stripping on the door bottoms - they make a kind that lifts off the floor when you start to open, but closes down to the floor does when the door is shut. And sticky traps.

I prefer the old style mouse traps. Quick death, instead of a slow one. Infinitely re-useable. Success rate greater than 90%, based on the times it is sprung without a victim. And that sweet "snap" of success!

Just carry the trap with the mouse to the outside trash can and lift the bail. Easy ejection.

Forget cheese, use peanut butter.

Sorry, Jimmy, I guess we'd rather talk mouse traps, than fishing.

Thanks Hook. I am also studying instructions on the Internet about placing the traps. I have not been doing it correctly. I just placed 10 traps and, as per the instructions I read, I will check the traps every two days. If not successful, I will move the traps. I am also going to heed the advice about placing spacers on the underside of my doors where these guys are coming in for a visit on a regular basis.

Placement should not be that important. If you are using a good bait, they will come to the trap. I dont know what the sticky traps are using, but a mouse cannot resist PB or bacon. Bacon works, too, but I find you have to tie it to the bait placement area on the trap or they can pull the piece free. Not possible with PB.

This assumes they are not easily getting food elsewhere in the house.
