Does anyone have any suggestions on crossing north on Christmas Day versus a day or so later? Also, if the government shutdown has affected crossing?

If you are wanting minimal wait time then Christmas day is probably the best day to cross. Up until a few days after New Years day I think wait times during the day will be substantial. I generally try to cross after 12am or later, of course not on Friday or Saturday nights. Even doing this, wait times can be as high as 20 minutes during the holidays.

Of course that is at the down town crossing since Mariposa is closed after 10pm.

CBP has an app that I keep on my phone and start checking as I'm getting close, just to see what kind of wait to expect and if I should go through downtown.  The shutdown won't impact the border operations, much like the military.  If only Congress didn't get paid, but I digress.

Here's the link to the website and they have direct links to the app below:

This site may prove even more helpful since it has cameras that show the two separate crossings. Site says the picture is updated every minute. The CBP app is updated every hour and a lot can change in an hour.

Today until Sunday will be terrible. I checked the cameras this morning. Already was a one hour wait at 4:15am.
