It takes a lot of energy to heat water so before getting too excited, you should work out the energy required.  It take 8.33 BTU to raise the temperature of 1 gallon of water, 1 deg F.  Calculate the volume of your pool and figure how many degrees you intend to heat the water to get a no-loss estimate of the energy required.  Then consider the heat loss though the walls of the pool and to the air that will also have to be included.  The heat loss is particularly large for an outside pool  buried in the ground.   Finally there is the efficiency of the heating system which will always be less than 1.  When you get all done, multiply by the cost of propane or electricity.

There is no magic about the heating system you used.  All systems have an efficiency less that 1.

There was a post a while back from someone that installed a propane heating system.  He used up a large tank of propane the first time he heated the pool and then decided that the expense was too great and never used it again.

Solar with gas assist would be the obvious choice in cloudless Sonora I would think

My pool is 12 ' wide, 30 ' long, indoors, 5 ' deep.(entire length)  I cover it when not using, and it takes a little over a day to heat it the first time.  I set the timer to heat it early morning will keep the temps around 85 degrees, and takes a few hours.  I use an oversized gas heater, inline system, and I love it.  Cost is what you use in propane.  I averaged $500 a month.

I also have this system you speak of. (heat pump ) I agree with poster #5.
Living in San Carlos should be easier to maintain heat with solar cover due to the general climate.

Nonetheless, heating any pool is costly. I can say I rarely ever had any mechanical issues and itis very easy to use. Well, worth the extra money if you can afford it. Moreover, If you enjoy swimming the health benefits from staying in shape are well worth the bonus!
Good luck
