Why is it when you go to the Deli and buy something and want to pay for it there, they tell you to go pay for it at the cashier. This is a waste of time as usually the only have two cashiers if that working. I've tried to find someone who speaks some English there, but no luck. I speak some Spanish, but not enough. Just looking for answers to my question.

Only cashiers take money - normal in most supermarkets in many parts of the world .

I have never paid at the deli/meat and cheese section at ANY market in the USA.IE Safeway, Frys, Albertson's, Wal Mart. You pick an order, it is cut, weighed, and wrapped, and priced. The butcher gives it to you and says 'Have a nice day'

It also may have to do with Mexican lack of trust with employees handling money. In most local business only the cashier has been entrusted with the money handling. It’s frustrsting to find something you want to buy and have to wait to have that employee give you a note. Then that employee takes your merchandise to another employee who holds it. Then you go to the cashier to pay with your note. Then you go to the employee who’s holding your merchandise with your receipt to get your merchandise. Very inefficient, but it’s a system that works for them...

I doubt that even with good Spanish there is anyone in the store who could tell you why it is the way it is or could change it for you.

Johnny D, I have been in deli´s in stores where the deli will let you pay them. It is a nice feature but I don´t expect it at every store.

Believe or not there may be some sanitary considerations. You really don’t want the person who’s serving you your pastrami to also collect you cash.

Not sure why, but this deli is also part of a restaurant-like sit down place, I think. Maybe it is those clients that they intended to serve. If I remember, I’ll ask the manager.
