#2 - Because I spend 4 mos a year in France, and I don't care about calling Can or US. On a PAYG no plan local SIM I get 12 GB data per mo for $25. I specified Canada because they are the same as the whole EU and probably no one here knows about EU phones.

If you purchase an Apple product from them, they do not come locked, you can put anyboy's sim card in them, and they will work.

I would go into the AT&T office in Guaymas. There is a woman who sits at a desk on the right as you go in that has been very helpful to us and speaks very good English.

AT&T USA and AT&T Mexico are different. I had an older AT&T USA phone without service nor SIM, but locked to AT&T.
AT&T Mexico could not use it without me getting it unlocked somewhere else.

The price for AT&T Mexico is *heaps* better than AT&T USA. And it covers all 3 countries to/from and roaming. The downside is that people in the USA do not want to call a Mexican number. Solve that with a VOIP APP and you have good service at a great price.

AT&T offers Mexico and Canada for free. You do not need to have a plan. For $10 a month they add 181 other countries, if you happen to travel a lot.

For me, it's not the calls - it's the data - I use Google Maps constantly.

Nice guy,You can use google maps without using any data ! Open the google app,go to the upper left hand corner of the app and hit the 3little dashes ( drop down menu) scroll to offline map, download the map for the area you are traveling in. While driving around, turn off data in the phone settings ( Under cellular data) Your map google map will work the same as if you are using data...it will still talk, reroute etc.It uses the phones gps.I've been using it while traveling in Mx the last several months. It's one of those tricks I wish I knew ages ago...saves you a lot !

Debbb1 - How do I download the map for the area without data? Or wifi either. I know how to download maps for offline use. The point is that data is cheap and fast in the EU and they eliminated all roaming charges last year. So I don't bother with offline maps. Public wifi is notorious for getting hacked. Cell data is much more secure.

If you are buying an AT&T phone here in Mexico and want data and the ability to use in Canada & US, then buy a plan. They are very inexpensive down here. Your number will be a Mexican number of course which can be an obstacle for your friends calling you (might be long distance) but you will be able to use easily. We have the AT&T Mexican plan and it provides as much data as you want to pay for at incredible prices. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are trying to do. I bought a OnePlus 3G with dual sim slots and use AT&T Mexico and TMobile so I have a US number also (for friends that freak out about calling a Mexican number when I am in the US). But really all I need is the AT&T Mexican plan.
