Planning a short trip to US.  For emergencies, will a Telcel phone work in US?  I don't really care how much it costs, not sure if it will work at all.  This is a pay as you go phone, no plan.

Ian- have you dialed MX landline or cell phones from the US with your TelCel pay as you go cell phone?
If so, please tell me what to dial in front of the area code and number.

thanks,

Richard be for you go if you have Amigo send them a text to 5050 in body of message put SL150 that will give you 30 days for 150 peso's free calling and texting to and from Mexico, US and Canada. You do have to have 150 peso on your phone before texting them though.

This offer actually started at 30 days, went down to 25 and is now at 23 days between expirations. But it is still a good deal. You can actually renew on line if you want to provide Telcel with a credit card (i choose not to) or you can pay at OXXOs or any of the usual places.
I used it to call and recieve calls from US numbers all summer. I dont think I called a Mex number while I was up there.

Well, dont believe everything you read on the internet.

But I know a few of us in this town using that plan, and it is now down to 23 days.

When we first heard of it, it was 30 days. By the time we got into the big Telcel office in Guaymas to sign up, it was down to 25. Then, during the summer, it was reduced to 23 days.

Are you using it right now, Guzzi? I am, and it definitely expired after 23 days. Just renewed yesterday, using the 5050/SL150 thing and it immediately sent me a message saying it would expire in 23 days.

I figured it out.

We are only paying 100 pesos for this plan. That's what we were told it cost, when we went to Telcel to sign up.

So, 23 days @ 100 pesos is about the same as 30 days @ 150 pesos.

My TelCel phone works just fine NOB. I can use it to call anywhere in Mexico from anywhere NOB and can use it for ALL local calls wherever I happen to be. A problem though, is friends and relatives calling me; for them it's a long distance call to Mexico even if I'm next door.

Please give the sequence of numbers you dial from the USA on your TelCel phone in front of a cell phone number in MX, if different from what Ian wrote above.
Thanks,

From my cell, I put in +1 52 1 xxx-xxx-xxxx for voice/text calls to TelCel cell phones. I use this same combination in my US Phone and my Mexican Phone regardless of what side of the border that I am on with either phone...

If I'm texting someone on Movistar, sometimes it requires the 1 between 52 and the area code to be removed. Trial and Error.

Calls to Mexico City are always hard...
I should clarify... on my cell phone.. you get the + by holding down the zero on the keypad..
The +1 is like entering 011 ....
I enter every USA phone number as +1 xxx-xxx-xxxx and every Mexican phone number as +1 52 1 xxx-xxx-xxxx . I do this in both my mex and us phones...they always figure out how to dial the numbers no matter where I am.
