I thought if you were a permanent resident of Mexico you were supposed to have a legally imported vehicle or one bought here and Mexican plates?

MT - you are correct to the letter of the law - however practically in the no hassle zone few bother !  There are also legal exceptions but that needs addressing by a specialist !
:)

The issue here is the insurance question in which I was interested to learn the solution - may be worth considering for US plated vehicle , my mx plated all have insurance which provides basic coverage in USA and Canada.

You are right Ian, that in San Carlos with its large number of visiting US citizens (and cars) , one can get away with a US car. However, if you are going to be going south or back north quite a bit, it would seem to me to be the best thing is to just go legal and have a car purchased in Mexico or legally imported. I just heard yesterday that Subaru has opened a dealership in Hermosillo. A great car for this area.

Be careful on a diesel- US trucks require low sulphur fuel which is not readily available in Mexico

Its "old" 2006 Chevy - fuel not the trouble trying to import is ! ( yet it was "made" in Mexico !

Interestingly I had to sell my TDI Jetta as it was too new and needed low sulphur , but the Chev is just outside then new requirements - thrives on mx diesel ( if I use right places to fill up ! )
:)
