I'm heading down to SC mid March and I am hoping the wait time at the border has decreased. I expect to take a late night bus out of Tucson around 10pm and don't anticipate a lengthy delay heading South. However, I am concerned about my return trip to the US as I know the border crossing was dreadful a few months ago. I am hoping to leave SC around 7/8pm on my way back to Tucson on the last Friday in March (spring break time... I am hoping the crossing doesn't turn into a disaster) and am hoping to time the crossing around 4/5am. Does that seem feasible? What should I expect for a wait time and is there a better time to leave SC/eventually cross the border into the US to mitigate any delay? Appreciate any feedback (or even wild speculation).

To add to the waiting woes, there is now a wait of up to 2 hours at the military check point near Benjamin Hill. Even friends taking the night bus have reported substantial delays caused by this stop. To be safe, I always schedule a total "cushion" of four hours waiting time when heading North. So, a run from Guaymas to Tucson on the bus can be as long as 10+ hours. To save time, I usually take Tufesa to Nogales, MX. Then cab to the border and walk across. Then grab a van to my destination on the US side. This method knocks off 2+ hours of wait time. Of course, it is impossible to avoid the wait near Benjamin Hill.

I never thought to get off the bus in Nogales and walk across the border. Do you think that would still be a good idea / save time if I timed my border crossing between 2 and 5 am? Also, I usually park in Tucson. Do you recommend a shuttle service from Nogales to Tucson? Or, do you know of any service to securely monitor your vehicle if left in Nogales (I only ask as I had my catalytic converter removed while I slept in a hotel there once)?

Walking across the border always saves time. It takes from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the line. Immediately after walking across and up a ramp there are vans waiting to take you to Tucson and Phoenix (and points in between).

Thanks. Any guess how much a van from Nogales to Tucson with 5 people might cost?

It has been a while for me but it was around $20 per person to Tucson. You might be able to strike a deal for 5 people.
